Why I Believe

It is a privilege for me to be able to share why I believe in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was raised by wonderful good parents in a home that tried to follow the teachings of this Church. I grew up being taught and raised by its teachings. My parents set great examples of faithfully serving in the Church and trying to fulfill their assignments and callings.

My testimony really began during my childhood and became stronger as I have grown up. When I was a child, our Church bordered the Brigham Young University Stadium parking lot and Canyon Road. It was torn down years ago and a new building sits there today. I feel like my testimony really developed there in that building. In the Chapel, behind the choir seats were 3 paintings…a large center one with two smaller ones on each side. The center painting was of the Sacred Grove, a place I know that Joseph Smith knelt and asked in prayer “which church to join?” I know that his prayer was answered and he was visited by God our Father and his son Jesus Christ. This was the beginning of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth in our latter day. As I would look at these paintings of the place where Joseph received this vision my belief in the Gospel started.

A second experience from my youth that influenced my testimony was when I was only 7 years old. A close girlfriend and I were asked to sing “Joseph Smith’s First Prayer” in sacrament meeting. We sang the first two verses as a duet and then the audience joined in for the last two verses. I won’t forget the feeling I had that day—as my testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith and receiving the first vision were true.

A third experience I had as an adult woman. I was serving in our church as our Ward Young Women President, working with our youth ages 12-18. I read an article in the newspaper about a stained glass artist Tom Holdman who was creating the stained glass windows for the Palmyra New York Temple. At that time he was relatively unknown. I felt strong impressions that I should call him and ask if I could bring our group of Young Women over to his studio to view the windows before they were shipped to New York.
I had a powerful conversation with Tom who has stutterer’s disease and it took a long time to get even a few words out of him. Because I was his first phone call (he later received hundreds) and because my impressions were so strong, he invited us over. We took the group over to American Fork. He shared his very spiritual experience of creating the First Vision in stained glass and how it came about. Then he had us actually clean the windows using a strong solution and little brushes to clean off the excess glue. I was SO nervous with our 12-18 year olds HOLDING these precious temple windows, but it was an amazing experience that I will never forget, and to hear Tom’s testimony—so hard to speak—each word taking so long. It was another time that my testimony was deeply touched and strengthened by the First Vision.

As I have continued to grow up and learn about the Gospel I have been guided and directed in my life by continuing to serve in this wonderful Church that I know is true. I know that my Heavenly Father lives and loves me and I can speak to him in prayer and He has answered my prayers. I know that He sent His son Jesus Christ to Earth to teach us all the way to live our lives and then he sacrificed his life in our behalf and atoned for all of our sins. Because of Christ’s atonement each of us can be forgiven for our weaknesses and be cleansed. Because of the restoration of the Gospel on the Earth today through the prophet Joseph Smith we have the blessing of the Priesthood restored to the Earth and Temples. I know we have a living Prophet and Apostles guiding our Church on the Earth today. We have the opportunity to be sealed to our families for all eternity. Through the Priesthood, we can receive personal Patriarchal blessings to help us in this life. My own Patriarchal blessing really strengthened my testimony of the Gospel. I know that Joseph Smith received by revelation, a book of ancient scripture, the Book of Mormon to guide us now in our lives. I am grateful also for the Bible and its teachings to apply to my life.

This testimony I have received of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is very important to me and guides the decisions I make in my life. I am grateful for it, cherish it, and hope to be able to share it with others.

What I Know To Be True

I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the true church on the earth. I know that the priesthood keys and the organization of Christ's true church have been restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. I know that through Joseph Smith's humble beginnings he knew and understood that he lacked the wisdom to know the things of his hearts desire, and he took it upon himself to ask God what is was that he should do concerning religion. I know with a surety that God hears and answers our prayers. It may not always be in the time or the way in which we wanted, but it's always in a way which will be beneficial to our spiritual progression. I know that our Heavenly Father knows each and everyone of us personally, by name. He knows the true desire of our hearts, and only wants whats best for each of us. I know that we are never given a trial that is too much for us to handle. I know that it's what we do when we are presented with a trial that can bring us closer or farther away from our Heavenly Father. He wants us to succeed, and make it through this probationary period here on earth where we don't have the opportunity to be with him and remember our experiences with him in the pre-earth life, so that we can eventually return to him, and dwell among him someday in the Celestial Kingdom. I know that through the sealing powers in the temple, that families can be together forever. I know that the work that we do in the temple is essential so that every person can have the opportunity to return to our Father in heaven, even if they did not have the opportunity to do so while they were here on this earth. I know that Christ performed the atonement so that we could be forgiven of all of our short comings. I know that if we remember to keep Christ in our hearts at all times, and remember him as we are presented with the opportunity to do wrong, and then upon the thought of him remember to chose the right, we will be blessed always for choosing the better path. I know however that when we do chose to do wrong, that we can always repent, and be made clean of our sins, and that all of our sins, no matter what, can be forgiven with time. I know the Book of Mormon is true. I know that when I read it I can feel the spirit confirming its truthfulness to me. I know that there is no way, at all that Joseph Smith could have possibly made up the Book of Mormon. No man would ever die for a book that was made up. He would not have just let the people at Carthage Jail kill him if he was lying, he would have denied its authenticity and returned to his family. But the book is true, and he gave all that he had so that us members of the church (and future members to come) could have the full truth and knowledge of the gospel. I know that the Book of Mormon goes hand in hand with the Bible and that the scriptures in each book support the words of the other. I know that missionary works is the only way in which we can bring new members into the church. It was through the loving testimony of a dear friend that I was able to come to the knowledge and understanding of these things within the short time that I have been a member of this church. My hope is that this testimony will reach to the heart of someone else who reads it, and that they to will be able to come to the understanding that these things that I have shared are true. I love my Heavenly Father, and his son, Jesus Christ, and I leave this testimony in His name, Amen.

Why I believe...

Christmas time always gives us an opportunity to reflect on what Christ has done for us. He atoned for our faults and gave us a reason to change and become who we are meant to be. I know that without the power of the priesthood, I personally wouldn't be here today, I probably wouldn't have lived more than a few hours, but luckily, I was blessed with the priesthood from the beginning of my life. Because of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I've seen people change their lives for the better and really embrace the atoning power of Christ in their lives. I personally have seen the change in my life as well, I truly love the gospel and I'm extremely grateful that because of the honest and sincere humble prayer of a fourteen year old boy in the 1800's, millions of lives have truly been changed for the better and we have the potential to live with our heavenly father once again, but most of all, I'm grateful for the atoning sacrifice of our savior Jesus Christ, he truly lived a perfect life and gave his life as an unblemished sacrifice for our sins. I know through his redeeming grace, we can become like him. I love him and I am forever in his debt.

In the Lord's Due Time - Finding My Faith

In Jeremiah 29:11-13 we read these words, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

On 10 March 2010, I celebrated my 12th year anniversary as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I actually began investigating the Church in late 1980. I had seen several television commercials about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and each one normally ended with how one could obtain a free copy of the Book of Mormon. I have always had a love for books and was always on the watch for any new book of interest that I might be able to add to my small library of books. Having no knowledge of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and having never heard of or seen a copy of the Book of Mormon, I thought that this might be an interesting addition to my library, and besides it was at the right price, free. What I later found out is that the commercials failed to mention one minor detail. Nothing that I can recall was ever mentioned about the fact that two young men, riding bicycles, dressed in suits would personally deliver the free Book of Mormon. I later learned that these young men were missionaries for the Church.

The day the missionaries arrived at my parents' home were I was living at the time; I invited them in and had a brief conversation with them. I found that some of what they had to say was of some interest to me and so I invited them to return again in a few days when I had more time to sit and talk with them and continue with our conversation. Time went on and after having met with the missionaries for about 5 months, I decided to leave home and join the United States Navy in March 1981. I thanked the missionaries for taking the time to visit me and teach me about what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes and teaches, and promised that I would continue to investigate the Church and its teachings at a later time. At that time I had only read a few passages from the Book of Mormon and though I had found what I read to be of great interest, I placed the book on the shelf in my library thinking that it would make a good reference book and perhaps I would return to read its pages some day.

Moving forward now in time, I found myself in San Diego California where I attended basic training, my first "A" school in electronics, and was eventually assigned to my first ship, the USS Jouett CG-29. One day while on liberty from the ship I came across a small bookstore. Being a lover of books I decided to go in and take a look around to see if I might find anything of interest. I did not realize at first that it was an LDS bookstore, but it didn't take long to figure out. I distinctly remember on that visit I purchased several things to include another copy of the Book of Mormon and a set of conference tapes. I would love to tell you that I went back to the ship and spent time listening to the conference messages and reading the Book of Mormon, but that is not the case. In fact, I tucked the tapes and the Book of Mormon neatly away thinking that I would get back to those some day.

In addition to the conference tapes and the Book of Mormon, I bought several other books. The title of one of the books particularly caught my attention that day for whatever reason. The title of the book is "In The Lord's Due Time". I still have that book in my personal library. I did not at that time stop to notice who the book was written by or even what the book was about. I would later come to realize that the book was written by a Black Brother of the Church by the name of Joseph Freeman. The name Joseph Freeman is perhaps unfamiliar to most of you, but Brother Joseph Freeman was the first Black to receive the Priesthood following the 1978 Revelation. I thought that was interesting and wondered what was meant by receiving the Priesthood and what exactly a revelation is. Like the other materials that I purchased that day, I put the book away intending to further research the matter at a later time.

As years went on, I decided to begin studying for the ministry. The Baptist church that I was attending while stationed in Norfolk Virginia had its own Bible College and so I enrolled and began preparing to one day become a Baptist minister. During my course of studies I heard, read, and learned about many negative comments about the Mormon Church and why one should not join this Church. I became very well acquainted with anti-Mormon materials through media resources such as video tapes, cassette tapes, newspapers, magazines and the like. For a time, I even communicated through letters with people who had at one time been members of the Church and for one reason or another had left the Church. Though I will admit that some of the negativity sounded interesting, I could not buy into the fact that this Church was all that these folks where proclaiming it to be. I reflected upon the things that the missionaries and I had discussed in earlier years and came to the conclusion that there must be more to the story than these folks that were against the Church were telling, and that there must be some evidence of truth in what the missionaries had taught me. In short, I determined in my mind that I would seek after the truth and ignore all of the negativity.

Let us move forward in time once again. The year is now 1997 and I found myself stationed at a NATO command in Keflavik Iceland. One day as I was surfing the internet in my room, I decided to do a search on the Mormon Church out of curiosity just to see what I might find. I found a link for the Church News and decided to check it out. I later found an email address and decided to send an email to the newspaper inquiring as to the cost of sending a subscription to the newspaper to an overseas location. I received an email back from one of the editors of the newspaper at that time whose name was Doug Osborn. In his email he inquired as to what I was doing in Iceland and what my interest was in the Mormon Church. I sent an email back stating that I was serving in the United States Navy and that I was merely interested in reading about what was going on in the Mormon Church at that time. He emailed me back and said that he thought that was interesting and then he said, please do not be upset with me, and I hope you do not mind, but I have contacted the local missionaries in your area and have asked them to contact you. Partially thinking that I was on a secure NATO base and that the chances of the missionaries being able to locate me was slim to none, I wrote back stating that would be fine. A few days later my telephone rang. I answered the phone and who do you suppose was on the other end of the line? You guessed it, a missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My first question was how he obtained my telephone number. He replied that it was really quite easy, I just called the operator and she gave it to me. My thoughts were, well so much for security. I gave them my address and invited them over.

To make a long story short Brothers and Sisters, I met with several groups of missionaries over the course of about a year. We had many wonderful conversations and discussions about the Bible and the Book of Mormon. At times they were asking me where I found certain Scriptures and would make notes of them. At other times they would call me and tell me that they found another investigator that was also Baptist and asked how I would handle answering certain questions that their investigator had. It became a great teaching / learning experience for each of us. Finally, in January 1998, I told the missionaries that I appreciated everything that they had taught me and that I would not make a final decision about being baptized until after I had read the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price in their entirety. I believe that the Lord had a hand in that as well as I believe that I was inspired to develop a 40-day reading schedule to complete all of the reading. For the very first time, a little over 17 years after my initial investigation of the Church, and for 40 consecutive days prior to my baptism, I read the Book of Mormon in its entirety, followed by the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price each in their entirety. Having completed all of the reading, I returned to Moroni's promise as recorded in the Book of Mormon in Moroni 10: 3-5 - "Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." After reading those words I knelt beside my bed and asked the Lord to let me know if these things were indeed true. I received my answer, called the missionaries and on the evening of Tuesday, March 10, 1998, I was baptized and became a member of the Lord's true Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The rest as they say is history with all things being fulfilled and accomplished according to the Lord's plans and in His due time.

I may not know a whole lot, but what I know, I know of a surety. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's true Church upon the earth today. I know that Joseph Smith was and is a prophet of God. I know that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are the Word of God and that both testify of a loving Savior and Redeemer. I know that President Thomas S. Monson is our prophet today and I sustain him as Prophet, Seer, and Revelator as I also sustain his counselors. I also know that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ holds all of my tomorrows in the palm of His hand. He has already prepared the work that He would have me do in the days ahead, is preparing me to do that work, and will one day in His due time call me forth to accomplish that work. Whether the work will be in a section of the vineyard of this great Stake of Zion or wherever the Lord may call me to serve, I humbly pray that I, like Nephi of old will be obedient to the call and go forth and do those things which the Lord commands.

I close by citing once again the words found in Jeremiah 29:11-13 - "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

God our eternal Heavenly Father lives and Jesus is the Christ. Of these things I do so testify and bear solemn witness in His Sacred Holy name. Amen.

Are Mormons Christian?

The answer to the question "Are Mormons Christian?" is a resounding YES!. I am a Mormon and like all other Mormons I believe in the same Jesus Christ that Lutherans, Penticostals, Baptists, Catholics, etc believe in. I believe in the Jesus Christ that was born 2010 years ago, assuming our calendar is correct. I believe that his father was God, his mother was Mary, his adopted father was Joseph. I believe that He was born in Bethlehem and grew up in Nazareth. At age 30 He began his ministry. He called 12 apostles, Peter, James, John, etc., went around doing good, performed many miracles, lived a perfect life, was betrayed by Judas, was crucified for the sins of the world, was ressurected on the 3rd day. He taught his gospel before and after his ressurection. I believe He will come again, this time, in glory.

So, as you can see, my dear non Mormon friends. We believe in the same Jesus Christ, the only one through which salvation can be had. Some of you have been taught that we are not Christians because we do not believe in the trinity in the same way you do. Please consider this; When Jesus was praying to his Father saying "not my will but thy will be done", or "into thy hands I commend my spirit" was he praying to himself? To me that would sound absurd! In the Bible there are many passages that refer to Jesus and the Father being one. Fortunately we also have a scripture in the Bible that explains what He meant when He said they were one. In John 17:21-22, again praying to his Father, He asks that his disciples be one with him "as" He is with the Father. Clearly his disciples could not be one with him in person therefore when He refers to him and the Father being one He obviously means "in purpose" not in person. God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are indeed one, in purpose, not in person. Their purpose is to bring to pass the ressurection and eternal life of man.

As Mormons we are blessed to have more information about our Savior Jesus Christ than what is contained in the Bible. It's called "The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ". I encourage you to read it with an open mind and then ask God himself in the name of Jesus Christ if it's true. Only then will you know for sure because the Holy Ghost will reveal it to your mind and heart in such a powerful way that you will know it for yourself without the need to accept anybody else's opinion on it. As I studied about the Church at the age of 24 I became very impressed and convinced of its truthfullness because of how much sense it made. But being "convinced" is not nearly as powerful as being "converted". That came when I read The Book of Mormon as put it's promise to the test.

The Church does not want this information to be a secret. That is why they are sending about 50 thousand missionaries throughout the world each year, to spread this information. These 50,000 go for 2 years at their own expense (talk about putting your money where your mouth is, I've always been very impressed with that, it speaks volumes about their sincerity). Just one last word in case you're still scared to check this out for yourself; we also believe and teach from the Bible and regard it very highly. We just happen to have additional scripture which makes things in the Bible much more understandable. I always use this example; a person who does not see well, never realizes how much they don't see until they put on glasses. Then they say "oh, I can see leaves on that tree, whereas before I could only see a mass of green".

I testify to you that I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the true and authorised kingdom of God in these last days and that it's here to prepare a people for Jesus Christ's glorious second coming. My life has been richly blessed by this knowlege for the last 34 years. It was the best decision I ever made. I hope that you decide to get "your own set of glasses" and be blessed with all the blessings that Our Father in Heaven has in store for you. I leave this testimony with you, in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.
